Your baby is almost a year old! It’s time to start planning their cake smash session, but how in the world do you decide on a theme?!? Here are five things to consider when choosing!

1. What does your baby and your family enjoy?

Does your family spend a lot of time in nature and gazing at the stars? Maybe you are a part of a fandom community or maybe you really enjoy sports! Thinking about the things that are important to your baby and your family is a great place for inspiration!

2. Does your baby have any favorite books or songs or movies?

Another great spot for inspiration is your little one’s favorite things to read or listen to! Does Baby Shark play on repeat at your house? Or is there a book you read every night at bedtime? Turn your little one’s favorite things into their custom cake smash session theme!

3. Favorite Foods

A “cake” smash doesn’t have to include cake at all! Thinking about your baby’s favorite foods is a fun alternative to a traditional cake smash. Bonus, babies are much more likely to actually dig in and eat familiar foods. Only about half of the babies that do cake smash sessions actually eat the cake. Most of the time they just play with the frosting, and although that always makes for adorable photos who can resist a baby shoving their favorite foods into their little mouth?!?

4. Seasonal Themes

Your theme doesn’t have to be related to a special interest! Looking at the calendar and the time of year is also a fun place to pull your theme from. Seasons and holidays are great choices for cake smash sessions!

5. No Theme at all!

Still can’t decide? You don’t need a “theme” at all! I can still design an adorable set for your little one just based around favorite colors and general style!
