School is over and the kids are home for summer. Now what?!? If you’re like me, you are stressed about providing a fun summer without emptying your bank account. Here are 10 things to do in Cincinnati that are budget friendly to keep your kids busy and off of YouTube in June!
Grab your chalk, check out a new park, and make some art! This event runs from June 3rd – June 8th at six different Deerfield Township parks. Each park has a different theme for the art and both professional and amateur artists (aka kids) are welcome! For more information, check out Deerfield Township’s website here: https://bit.ly/3wZUXoG
UDF ice cream, face painting, balloon artists, and a MadCap Puppet show – all for FREE! This event repeats each month during the summer, but June 2nd is the first one. I plan on taking my kiddos to this event, so if you see me make sure to say hi! For more information, check out their Facebook event here: https://bit.ly/3M6depP
Turn off the screens, and get outside! And what better place to do that in the summer than in a creek!?? This is one of my kids’ favorite summer activities every year and I’m sure we will go to lots of these! Join Butler County Soil and Water Conservation District for creeking in the parks every Thursday in June. It’s a different park each week and registration is requested which you can do here: https://bit.ly/38RLWWZ
As much as I wish all summer days were warm and sunny, sometimes a rainy day calls for a movie! Regal theaters have kid friendly summer movies on Tuesday and Wednesdays at 11:30. And tickets are only $2! Movies for June include The Lorax, The Lego Movie, and lots of others. Check out all the offerings and buy your tickets online here: https://www.regmovies.com/static/en/us/promotions/summer-movie-express
This is another “go outside and learn something” activity. Tuesday mornings at 10am there is a new topic to learn about. The class rotates between Armco Park and Landen Deerfield Park. June’s topics include Reptiles & Amphibians, Insects, Fossils, and Rabbits. This is a drop-in class so stop by any time between 10am and noon! My kids do the summer reading program with Midpointe Library every year. It’s a great way to keep them reading in the summer and they like working towards prize goals. Plus it’s a perfect excuse to spend a hot afternoon browsing books in the nice cool library! Learn more about Midpointe’s program here: https://www.midpointelibrary.org/page/summer-reading . Cincinnati Public Library has a program too which you can find more information about at https://cincinnatilibrary.org/summer/
Fishing, bouncy houses, archery, and lots of other fun will be happening at this summer kick-off event in Lebanon on June 4th. Get there early and enter your little fisher in the tournament and grab a goodie bag! All the details can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/357730199321038
Ever want to be a part of breaking a world record?!? Well Coney Island has just the event for you. From noon on June 17th to noon on June 18th, they will be attempting to break the record for the most people to go down a water slide in a 24 hour period. This is the most expensive event on this list, but you can save money by going after 4pm. And stay as late as you want – the park will host a midnight swim party with music and prizes all night long! How many other kids will go back to school in August and be able to say they broke a world record?!? Find all the details and get tickets here: https://coneyislandpark.com/event/world-record-attempt/
There isn’t many things more exciting than climbing into firetrucks, police cars, construction equipment, and even a limousine. Touch-a-Truck events are one of my favorite things about summer! Everyone has a good time and it’s a great chance to meet some of the people who help protect and serve our community. Montgomery’s Big Rig Gig is one of the biggest events of it’s kind in Cincinnati and always a good time. This year it is June 9th from 9am-noon. Pro-tip: Get there early to avoid the heat and the crowds! More information here: https://www.montgomeryohio.gov/event/big-rig-gig/
If you’ve never been to Cesar’s Creek, you are missing out! Stop by the nature center on June 23rd to watch them feed the reptiles in their care and then stick around for their fishing event just for kids! You can round out the day with swimming on their sandy lake beach or a great nature hike. This one is on my calendar as a must-do, so make sure to say hi if you come! One of my favorite things about living here is that there are always things to do in Cincinnati. There are the obvious options like the zoo and any of our amazing parks but sometimes it’s the smaller events that make the most long-lasting memories. I gathered a bunch of summer activities and put them together into a spreadsheet for easy reference. Take a look and comment with what you think looks like fun! I hope I see you out and about this summer! https://bit.ly/38CjiJi
